What is Heartgard?

Heartgard is a small beef chewable tablet that you give to your dog which treats for heartworm, roundworms and hookworms.

What type and breed of dogs can use Heartgard?

Any breed or type of dog can use Heartgard, as long as they are over 6 weeks of age. Heartgard Plus comes in three sizes which are color coded which are blue up to 11kgs, green 12-22kgs and brown 23-45kgs.

What quantities can I buy Heartgard Plus in?

Heartgard Plus in Single doses which will treat one dog for 1 month, 6 packs which will treat one dog for 6 months and 12 packs which will treat one dog for 12 months.

What do the different color packets of Heartgard mean?

Heartgard uses a different color for each weight range of dog. There are three different colors in total, blue is for dogs up to 11kgs, green is for dogs 12-22kgs and brown is for dogs 23-45kgs.

How often can I use Heartgard on my dog?

You should only use Heartgard once a month. It works to prevent heartworm disease in dogs by elminating heartworm larvae that infected the dog in the month (30 days) before treatment. It also controls heartworm infections acquired in the previous 4 months provided monthly treatment is continued for at least 12 months.

How long after using Heartgard can I bathe, wash, wet or let my dog swim?

After using Heartgard it is fine to have your dog swim or get wet straight away.

How old does my dog need to be before I can start using Heartgard plus on a puppy?

You can start using Heartgard chews on puppies 6 weeks and older. Using it on puppies under 6 weeks can cause side effects.

How effective is Heartgard at preventing heartworm in dogs?

How should Heartgard be stored?

It should be stored in a relatively cool area, away from light and out of the reach of children.

Do I need to give Heartgard with a meal or can it be given to my dog at anytime?

Heartgard Plus chewables can be given to your dog at anytime. You may find it easier to give it to your dog with a meal.

Can I use Heartgard Plus for dogs on my cat?

No, you cannot use Heartgard Plus for dogs on a cat.

Do I need to treat all my dogs for heartworm?

Yes, we highly recommend that you treat all your dogs for heartworm as if one is going to pick it up it is very likely the others will too.

What does Heartgard Plus treat?

It treats for heartworm, roundworms and hookworms.

If I miss giving my dog a dose of Heartgard, what should I do?

If a dose is missed, administer the tablet with food again and just resume a monthly schedule. So you will use it again in another full month from when it was just given.

What should I do if my dog has a bad reaction or side effect to Heartgard?

If your dog has any bad reaction or side effect to Heartgard take him/her to the very as soon as possible. Heartgard has been tested on all kinds of dogs inlcuding stud dogs, breeding bitches and puppies 6 weeks and older with no side effects to be found during these tests.
